Today, one in six laboratory-confirmed bacterial infections worldwide is resistant to standard antibiotic treatment. At the same time, a significant share of global antibiotic use occurs in food-producing animals. However, in Sweden, only 10\u201315 percent of total sales are used in animal husbandry. Even though Sweden has demonstrated that antimicrobial use can be significantly reduced, while maintaining productivity, this isn\u2019t enough to solve the problem with AMR. <\/p>\n\n              <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section data-id=\"block_4ce447409cda08c586bd591a29c34598\" class=\"text   align col-lg-6 col-12  anchor-block  \"  data-heading=\"Our Contribution\" >\n    <div class=\"text__content  col-lg-12 col-12  \">\n              <h2 class=\"text__heading heading\">Our Contribution<\/h2>\n            <div class=\"text__content\">\n                  <p>Through The Antibiotic Platform \u2013 From Farm to Fork, Axfoundation and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksla.se\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry (KSLA)<\/a> created an independent arena for dialogue and collaboration around antibiotic resistance in the food system.<br \/>\nThe Platform aimed to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>translate global AMR goals and strategies \u2013 including those of WHO, FAO, and the United Nations \u2013 into practical action in a Swedish and Nordic context;<\/li>\n<li>strengthen a One Health perspective, recognizing the links between animal, human, and environmental health;<\/li>\n<li>bring together stakeholders who rarely meet \u2013 from farmers and food companies to investors, researchers, and policymakers \u2013 to identify barriers and workable solutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Platform combined knowledge exchange with structured dialogue and policy engagement. Over time, this helped build a shared understanding of what responsible antibiotic use means in practice.<\/p>\n\n              <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section data-id=\"block_ae747b5075893b6898801280fc8dfe11\" class=\"facts   align col-lg-6 col-12  \"  data-heading=\"Four Facts About Antibiotics\" >\n  <div class=\"facts__content  text__content  col-lg-12 col-12  \">\n          <h2 class=\"text__heading heading\">Four Facts About Antibiotics<\/h2>\n        <div class=\"text__content \">\n              <ol>\n<li><strong>Globally, a larger volume of antibiotics is used for animals than for humans.<\/strong> In Sweden, the reverse applies. Thanks to proactive efforts, only about one-tenth of all antibiotics sold are used for animal husbandry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Overuse of antibiotics is a<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axfoundation.se\/en\/projects\/antibiotics-in-food-production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> widespread problem in global food production.<\/strong><\/a> There is a clear connection between shortcomings in animal husbandry and extensive antibiotic use. The more antibiotics that are used, the greater the risk of bacteria developing resistance to antibiotics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antibiotic resistance is one of the top ten threats to human health, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).<\/strong> Approximately 1.2 million deaths annually are directly linked to resistant bacterial infections.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Sweden has demonstrated that it is possible to significantly reduce antibiotic use in animal husbandry while maintaining production.<\/strong> Compared to many countries, Sweden has a very low average consumption. However, in several EU countries and countries outside the EU, the problem is significant. Efforts must be made in multiple areas and through collaboration across sectors and industries.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n          <\/div>\n    <div class=\"circle\"><\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section data-id=\"block_4b7ccbaf43d7ab104161f7e386d3b6d9\" class=\"text   align col-lg-6 col-12  anchor-block  \"  data-heading=\"Results\" >\n    <div class=\"text__content  col-lg-12 col-12  \">\n              <h2 class=\"text__heading heading\">Results<\/h2>\n            <div class=\"text__content\">\n                  <p>The Antibiotic Platform contributed to broadening and deepening knowledge of antimicrobial resistance and responsible antimicrobial use among actors in business, academia, public authorities, and civil society. It strengthened understanding of how preventive animal health management, surveillance systems, regulatory frameworks, and business decisions are interlinked. The Platform also contributed to developments beyond its own activities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Antibiotic resistance gained increased attention in <strong>investor dialogue<\/strong>. During the period, the Swedish AP Funds\u2019 Council on Ethics identified<a href=\"https:\/\/etikradet.se\/en\/our-work\/proactive-work\/antimicrobial-resistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> antibiotic resistance<\/a> as a <a href=\"https:\/\/etikradet.se\/en\/our-work\/proactive-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">focus area<\/a> in its engagement with companies. Several major banks subsequently joined initiatives addressing the issue within ESG frameworks.<\/li>\n<li>Axfoundation and KSLA provided input to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.government.se\/press-releases\/2025\/11\/government-adopts-new-national-strategy-against-antibiotic-resistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> Sweden\u2019s National Strategy against Antimicrobial Resistance<\/strong><\/a> 2026\u20132035, adopted in 2025. The strategy clarifies the role of food production and primary producers in reducing resistance risks.<\/li>\n<li>The Platform highlighted the need for continued proactive animal health management and <strong>improved data on animal health<\/strong> and antimicrobial use. <a href=\"https:\/\/lagen.nu\/prop\/2024\/25%3A91?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Government proposals in 2024\u20132025<\/a> to strengthen the collection and sharing of animal health data respond directly to challenges raised in the Platform\u2019s discussions.<\/li>\n<li>Internationally, Axfoundation contributed \u2013 through the AMR Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Platform \u2013 to recommendations presented at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/26-09-2024-world-leaders-commit-to-decisive-action-on-antimicrobial-resistance?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>UN High-Level Meeting on AMR in 2024<\/strong>.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n              <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section data-id=\"block_c14d053a81d97c773704ef918c98d6f0\" class=\"facts   align col-lg-6 col-12  \"  data-heading=\"Knowledge-Building Activities \u2013 Selected Examples\" >\n  <div class=\"facts__content  text__content  col-lg-12 col-12  \">\n          <h2 class=\"text__heading heading\">Knowledge-Building Activities \u2013 Selected Examples<\/h2>\n        <div class=\"text__content \">\n              <p>Between 2021 and 2025, The Antibiotic Platform organized seminars, roundtables, and dialogues on topics including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksla.se\/aktiviteter\/drivers-for-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drivers for change<\/a> \u2013efforts to decrease inappropriate use of antibiotics in animal production<\/li>\n<li>animal health data and governance,<\/li>\n<li>environmental aspects of antibiotic manufacturing,<\/li>\n<li>the role of financial markets in addressing AMR,<\/li>\n<li>trade, procurement, and supply chain responsibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Publications and podcast episodes were also produced in collaboration with KSLA.<\/p>\n<p>Recordings and summaries from several of these events are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axfoundation.se\/antibiotikaplattformen\">available in Swedish.<\/a><\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n    <div class=\"circle\"><\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section data-id=\"block_bc02f3d85b0e6c5f5167603337d0a527\" class=\"facts   align col-lg-6 col-12  \"  data-heading=\"Key Learnings\" >\n  <div class=\"facts__content  text__content  col-lg-12 col-12  \">\n          <h2 class=\"text__heading heading\">Key Learnings<\/h2>\n        <div class=\"text__content \">\n              <p>The Platform\u2019s dialogues and collective experience have generated several key lessons on how to successfully address antimicrobial resistance.<\/p>\n<h4>One Health requires a systems approach<\/h4>\n<p>AMR cannot be addressed in isolated sectors. Measures related to animal welfare, biosecurity, vaccination, diagnostics, procurement, sourcing, trade, investment decisions, and pharmaceutical manufacturing are interconnected. When incentives are misaligned or transparency is lacking, progress stalls.<\/p>\n<h4>Data drives improvement<\/h4>\n<p>Reliable data on animal health and antimicrobial use are essential for accountability, benchmarking, and policy development. When data is accessible and linked to feedback, it becomes a tool for improvement rather than an administrative burden.<\/p>\n<h4>Simplified claims do not solve complex problems<\/h4>\n<p>Labels such as \u201cantibiotic-free\u201d risk being misleading and do not necessarily promote responsible antimicrobial stewardship. The work continues through the respective initiatives of Axfoundation and KSLA.<br \/>\nAxfoundation continues through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axfoundation.se\/en\/the-antibiotic-criteria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Antibiotic Criteria<\/a> \u2013 a tool enabling the food sector to set and follow up requirements on antibiotic use, and animal welfare in meat, dairy and seafood supply chains.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axfoundation.se\/en\/the-antibiotic-dialogue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Antibiotic Dialogue<\/a> \u2013 a supplier dialogue group supporting food companies in the practical implementation of responsible antimicrobial use in animal husbandry.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axfoundation.se\/en\/newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Updates on Antibiotics \u201cAntibiotikaspaningen\u201d<\/a> \u2013 a news update in Swedish covering antibiotics, trade, and animal welfare, produced by veterinarian and AMR expert Jenny Lundstr\u00f6m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>KSLA continues its role as a meeting place for science and practice.
